Yale's Casey Hughes missed a pair of free throws in the final seconds against Cornell last weekend, and the Elis suffered a 60-59 defeat.

Before this last week, the standings appeared as if they might result in a legitimate Ivy race for the first time in several years. But Yale played itself out of that race in Ithaca when it was struck by free-throw karma.

One week after Penn beat itself in New Haven, Conn. by missing 13 of 21 free throws, Yale senior Casey Hughes found himself on the line in Ithaca with two shots as his team was down 60-59. He missed both.

With the loss, both Cornell and Yale are 6-2 in conference play.

In the Ivy cellar, Princeton finally won a game, outlasting Harvard in double overtimeon Friday. Freshman guard Lincoln Gunn had 22 points for the Tigers while Drew Housman scored 33 for the Crimson. Both point totals were career highs for the players.

The exhausted squad lost to a reeling Dartmouth team the following night, despite allowing just 45 points. Their struggles came largely on the glass as they were out rebounded 31-20 by the Big Green.

Fabulous Freshmen. Columbia point guard Patrick Foley took home Ivy Rookie of the Week honors. He averaged 15 points and 5.5 assists per game against Yale and Brown. He was a perfect 12-for-12 from the stripe.

Princeton point guard Marcus Schroeder is now the Division I leader in minutes per game at 39.1. He played 84 minutes in this weekend's competition. Princeton freshmen Lincoln Gunn and Zach Finley have started the last six games alongside Schroeder. Cornell's strong trio of freshmen, Louis Dale, Ryan Wittman, and Alex Tyler were instrumental in ensuring close wins over Yale and Brown. The three were responsible for 36 of the 60 points scored against Yale and 37 of 61 against Brown. They also collected a total of 28 rebounds.

Jones vs. Jones. In the seventh matchup of Columbia coach Joe Jones against his brother James Jones of Yale, the Elis were victorious for the sixth time. In those six victories James has bested his brother by over nine points a contest.

Yale won 85-71 with 26 points from Eric Flato, 20 points from Caleb Holmes, and a superb 60.5 shooting percentage. Yale used an 11-point run with nine minutes left to put the game out of reach. If there is any particular reason for Columbia's home loss, it was the fact that they made only five of 17 shots from behind the arc.

Jadwin Woes Be Gone. When Dartmouth eked by Princeton in Jadwin Gymnasium on Saturday night, it was the first time the Big Green won in Jadwin since 1987, breaking a 19-game losing streak. Without senior guard and leading scorer Leon Pattman, Dartmouth rode the hot hand of Alex Barnett for 23 of their 45 points. Barnett hit 10 of his 15 shots from the floor and three of four from the foul line.

Total Ivy Attendance. 22,313 fans watched eight games of pure Ivy competition.
