Sports update: Penn falls to Princeton, 31-30 in overtime

OT curse continues as botched snap dooms Quakers

The Quakers set a new NCAA record for consecutive overtime games on Saturday when an unlikely fourth-quarter rally resulted in a game-tying touchdown.

Four possessions periods later, Penn also held the record for most consecutive overtime losses, as the Quakers suffered a 31-30 loss at the hands of rival Princeton.

The game, which could be described as nothing short of bizarre, seemed to be going the Quakers' way when Billy May reeled in a Robert Irvin pass to convert a 4th-and-24 with just over a minute to go. Several plays later, the Quakers tied the score at 24 after being down by as much as 14 earlier in the quarter.

And when Penn blocked a field goal to end the first overtime after seemingly giving the game away on a 4th-and-2 sack to end their own possession, it looked like the Quakers' third overtime in three games might be the charm.

When the Tigers fought back to get a touchdown in the second overtime, and the Quakers responded with one of their own on the very next play, it seemed like the game was destined to go the Quakers' way. But, as has been the theme all season, a special teams miscue sunk Penn. Holder Matt Reinert dropped a bad snap, and his desperate dash towards the end zone ended just two yards short, giving the Tigers a 31-30 victory.

The Quakers are now eliminated from the Ivy League title race, and the Tigers will head to New Haven next Saturday for a critical showdown with Yale that could easily be the deciding match for the championship.
