Club Sports Roundup

Editor's note: In the interest of better serving the campus community, starting today we will be featuring a club sports roundup every Wednesday. If you play a club sport and would like your team to be included, have a team captain or coach send an e-mail to MLConrad@sas.upenn.edu.

Penn's varsity sports weren't the only ones in action this past weekend - take a look at highlights from recent club sports competitions.

n Women's Rugby. The team improved its record to 5-1 with a decisive 26-0 victory over Swarthmore last Saturday.

Junior Laura Martin scored Penn's first try, freshman Andrea Anastasi added another tally and junior Nawal Maalouf contributed two scores on the day to seal the win.

The women went undefeated during fall league play and earned a playoff spot. The first round of playoffs will be hosted by Ursinus on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the finals on Sunday.

n Sailing. Six members boosted the squad to an eighth-place finish at the War Memorial Regatta in Kings Point, N.Y., qualifying the team for the Atlantic Coast Championships at Brown on Nov. 11-12.

The performance of the contingent in three races was enough to qualify for the championships because the remainder of the races on Saturday were cancelled due to strong winds.

n Equestrian. The group was named the Reserve High Point Team, taking second overall and earning 30 points during the weekend's show, hosted by West Chester University at the Hidden Fox Farms in Mohnton, Pa.

The best individual performance came from co-captain Katie Carssow, who took first in the open fences as well as second in the open flat.

Senior Lindsey Pell also earned a top place, finishing first in the intermediate fences.

n Men's Rugby. The team finished its season with a first-round playoff loss to No. 7 Kutztown on Oct. 21. Penn went 2-4 in that loss.

n Women's Soccer. On Nov. 4, the team returns to action when it travels to New Haven, Conn., for a doubleheader against Yale and Boston College.

After a successful season, the team is in position to participate in Nationals, held in Arizona, for the first time in six years.By Krista Hutz
