Pennsylvania State Treasurer Bob Casey Jr. is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Rick Santorum for his seat in Congress.
Casey, the son of former Pennsylvania Gov. Bob Casey, says that his strong record and solid character make him the right choice.
On the issues, Casey says he supports a plan for withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, and has emphasized affordable health care and fiscal responsibility. According his Web site, Casey will "push for a clear exit strategy [for U.S. troops in Iraq] and plans for the Iraqi forces to take care of their own security."
Additionally, the site says that Casey opposes cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. Instead, he says he supports various methods of reducing Medicaid spending.
He calls for balancing the federal budget, but also says that he supports tax cuts for the middle class.
Citing his record as both Pennsylvania's auditor general and state treasurer, Casey says that he is fiscally responsible and will work to end so-called "corporate welfare."
He says he supports a bill that would create a way for illegal immigrants to gain citizenship
But Casey is not the picture of left-wing liberalism, however.
He is Roman Catholic and a conservative on many social issues, including abortion rights.
Casey has accused Santorum of rubber-stamping President George Bush's agenda.
