Trustees to discuss financial aid, faculty at meetings

Board will convene today for the first time this semester

University trustees plan to discuss issues ranging from Student Health Services to faculty retention as they convene for their fall meetings today.

Sixty current board members and 30 former ones plan to partake in the meetings, according to University Secretary Leslie Kruhly. The Board of Trustees is the University's top governing body, and is responsible for major budget and hiring decisions.

The meetings begin this morning with the Development Committee meeting and end tomorrow afternoon. Along with committee meetings, the trustees will formally dedicate Skirkanich Hall.

University President Amy Gutmann said that the Academic Policy Committee will discuss faculty recruitment and retention, and the Student Life committee will discuss the college house system.

Kruhly added that Provost Ron Daniels will make a presentation to the Student Life Committee, which examines college housing and student housing options on and off campus. She said that this committee will also examine Student Health Services.

The provost will also make a presentation at the Academic Policy Committee meeting.

Trustee Peter Skirkanich, who presented the main gift for Skirkanich Hall, the new engineering building on 33rd Street, will be honored at the dedication of the building.

Kruhly said that the University's eastward expansion will not be the focus of these meetings because these issues "have been discussed really thoroughly at previous trustee meetings."

However, Daniels and Executive Vice President Craig Carnaroli will make a presentation for former trustees on the progress of the development.

There will be a discussion of the proposed new pedestrian bridge between Bower Field and Hollenbach Hall at the Facilities and Campus Planning Committee meeting.

Kruhly said that she expects a strong turnout for these meetings.
