Survey reveals faculty demographics

A recently released Department of Education survey reported the demographics of college professors across the United States as of the fall of 2003.

According to the survey, men still dominate college professorships, making of 61.7 percent of the respondents.

The survey also reported the gender breakdown of college professors according to subject areas such as business and engineering.

The results showed that men led in every category except for programs in education, in which 58.3 percent of professors are women.

According to a similar study conducted seven years ago, the gender gaps have stayed the same in many of the subject areas. However, in agriculture and home economics, women have increased their presence from 18.2 percent to 36.1 percent.

The race of full-time faculty and staff was also reported, showing that Asians and Pacific islanders have a stronger presence ? at 21 percent ? in engineering than any other minority group.

The survey sampled 35,000 full- and part-time faculty and instructional staff across 1,080 institutions in the United States.

Liberty Medal award ceremony postponed

Philadelphia's Independence Day celebrations will be missing one ceremony they have not been without for 16 years.

City officials have announced that the presentation of the Liberty Medal will not take place on July 4 ? as it has since its inception in 1989 ? because the winner will not be able to be present.

"Because of unavoidable scheduling conflicts with the recipient, we are not able to present the award on the Fourth of July," Liberty Medal Director Mary Gregg said.

This year's winner has not yet been announced, but the board of the Liberty Medal said that both the winner's name and the date of this year's ceremony will be announced soon. The ceremony is expected to be rescheduled for the fall.

The delay of the award ceremony ? which includes a $100,000 prize ? is a minor setback to the city's Fourth of July weekend plans, which include the massive Live 8 concert on July 2 and another concert featuring Elton John on July 4. Both concerts are to be free and held on the Art Museum steps.

Previous winners of the Liberty Medal have included Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and South African leader Nelson Mandela.

The only other Liberty Medal recipient who could not attend the ceremony on July 4 was Polish Solidarity leader Lech Walesa. Walesa was awarded the first-ever medal in 1989 but was busy preparing to take his seat in the Polish parliament. His family accepted the award on his behalf, and he visited Philadelphia a few weeks later.
