The Daily Pennsylvanian

A cut above the rest

This past school year has seen Penn records fall and unknown names rise to the top of the Quakers sports world.

But The Daily Pennsylvanian is here to make sense of it all and present to you the all-Penn teams of 2004-05.

The players of the year are both well-known athletes who continued to excel in their senior seasons -- women's soccer forward Katy Cross and men's basketball guard Tim Begley.

Cross, a native of Claremont, Calif., and holder of numerous Penn offensive records, was the ESPN academic All-American of the year, to go along with her team-leading 12 goals and seven assists. She was also a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection.

Begley, from Freehold, N.J., also won the Ivy League Player of the Year award while leading the Quakers to the NCAA Tournament.

Along the way, he set the school's record for three-pointers made in a career, passing Matt Maloney's mark of 244.

But more importantly, he provided the leadership to turn around what could have been a lost season and instead helped the Quakers win 17 of their final 19 games and take home the Ivy League title.

The rest of the first teams, though, came from some more obscure places.

Joining Cross on the women's first team are sophomore epee fencer Holly Buechel, who finished ranked fourth in the nation; lacrosse junior midfielder Emily Cochran, who is currently tied for the team lead in goals; senior basketball guard Karen Habrukowich, who was named first-team all-Big 5; junior gymnast Emily Petkun, who advanced to the NCAA Regionals; and junior field hockey midfielder Lea Salese, who was named Philadelphia City 6 MVP.

On the men's side, two-sport senior Josh Appell makes the first team for his stellar punting and pitching. He is joined by freshman foil fencer Ron Berkowsky, who finished third at the NCAA Championships; senior wide receiver Dan Castles, who set the all-time career touchdown record in a season in which he averaged nearly 100 yards and a touchdown per game; senior wrestler Matt Feast, who is a three-time All-American; and junior runner Courtney Jaworski, who was the co-athlete of the meet at the Indoor Heptagonal Championships.
