Video game predicts Boston College romp

There was no virtual slipper for potential Cinderella Penn against Boston College.

The Eagles trounced the Quakers, 93-67, in a simulated Xbox matchup on ESPN's College Hoops 2K5 video game.

Boston College was simply on a different level than its Ivy foe, as four Eagles players scored in double digits in front of a sold out Wolstein Center in Cleveland.

Leading the way for the Big East squad was junior guard Louis Hinnant, who scored 19 points. The Maryland native was able to slip by Penn defenders at will, pacing BC to an early lead with his 13 first-half points.

Senior guard Jermaine Watson had 17 points off the bench, while All-Big East forward Jared Dudley had 16 points. Sophomore guard Sean Marshall had 15 points.

But more important than the Eagles' ability to score was their ability to draw fouls early in the game.

Penn's Tim Begley scored his team's first six points before picking up his second foul with just under 14 minutes left in the first half. Sophomore guard Ibby Jaaber also missed most of the first half with foul trouble.

The Eagles were able to open up a 20-point lead with Penn's two stars on the bench, and the game would never be in question again.

Begley had an impressive second half to finish with a game-high 26 points, but no other Penn player was able to reach double figures.

Mark Zoller, Steve Danley, Friedrich Ebede and Jaaber all finished with eight points.

The Quakers were able to put together a 12-3 run (all 12 points were from Begley) in the middle of the second half to cut BC's lead to nine, but the Eagles responded immediately with an even more impressive 21-3 run.

Particularly disappointing was the play of Penn guard Eric Osmundson. The video game predicted that he would score just two points in his first game back from a sidelining illness. Osmundson's defense was no better, as he was unable to stop the free-scoring Hinnant.

Earlier this season, the computer simulation correctly predicted that the Quakers would defeat Princeton at the Palestra.
