Two football players win Ancient Eight honors

Defensive end Michael Sangobowale and punter Josh Appell were honored by the Ivy League yesterday for their performances in Saturday's win over Columbia.

Sangobowale was named Defensive Player of the Week after recording eight tackles against the Lions, 3 1/2 of which were for a loss. Both of these totals are a career high for the Bronx, N.Y., native.

While Penn has been struggling at the kicker position, Josh Appell has shined as a punter this season. He was named Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week after recording an impressive 56-yard punt against Columbia.

This was the third time the Woodmere, N.Y., native punted for that distance this season, his longest kick of the year.

Cross Country impresses at Penn State National

The men's cross country team finished in second at Saturday's Penn State National meet, losing only to American University.

The Quakers placed two runners in the top five, with senior Dusty Lieb finishing third overall (25:30) and senior Nolan Tully finishing fifth (25:37). Both runners were just seconds away from overall winner Dan Mazzocco of Penn State, who had a time of 25:27.

The host school finished in third place, with James Madison and Duquesne rounding out the top five.

The women's team took 12th place at the meet, with senior Claire Duncan recording Penn's best time, 22:16, which was good enough for 51st place.

Providence won the women's competition, followed by Duke, West Virginia, Boston College and Cornell.

The Quakers, who recorded 393 points, finished just ahead of Kentucky, which tallied 405 points.

Both cross country squads return to action next week for the Heptagonal Championships in New York's Van Cortlandt Park.
