Fraternity allegedly violated rules for registered parties

Hard liquor use reported by many at Castle party where student fell

In violation of registered party regulations, students have reported the presence of hard liquor and underage drinking at the Psi Upsilon party where College junior Matthew Paris fell two stories on Sunday morning.

"There were more than a few" liquor bottles on the top floor of the party, according to Engineering sophomore Kyle Newman.

College freshman Eric Wrigley corroborates his reports that students were taking shots of hard liquor.

"There was definitely a lot of vodka and some kind of pear liquor," Wrigley said.

Paris was reported to have had 21 marks on his arm to signify the number of shots he had taken in celebration of his birthday. It remains unknown when Paris arrived at the party and whether or not he drank while there.

Students at the Castle that night gave differing accounts of whether underage drinking occurred.

Numerous party attendees said they were asked for identification at the door of the house, and that only those over 21 were given bracelets signifying that they could be served beer or wine. Further, many students said that individuals who did not have a bracelet were not served.

However, some of the attendees reported that underage drinking took place.

"There was definitely underage drinking" that night, according to a sophomore in attendance. "That is always what happens" at parties.

At a party that has been described as "mobbed" and "packed," some individuals evaded security. One snuck in a back door, and another "borrowed" a friend's bracelet.

"If you wanted [beer], you could get it," Wrigley said.

Several other attendees have described a different experience.

"When I went, they were pretty strict," College freshman Matt Dwyer said.

University-registered parties are not allowed to have kegs or serve hard liquor. The University strongly recommends that groups use trained bartenders and security personnel.

Psi Upsilon brothers declined to comment.
