Editorial There are eight departments within the DP Editorial side. Each department has its own specific function that is vital to the day-to-day operation of our many publications. From News to Photography, we all work together to provide our community with an award-winning source of news and information. DP Editorial departments include News, Sports, Design, Dailypennsylvanian.com, The Weekly Pennsylvanian, Photography, Copy, and 34th Street Magazine.
Business Advertising The DP is an independent student newspaper and almost all of our revenues are generated from advertising sales. Therefore, it's imperative that we have a strong sales staff to keep the company financially secure. As the sales staff, we focus on maintaining relationships with our current clients and seeking out new business. Ad reps service these customers by determining which of our media outlets (34th Street, the DP, or dailypennsylvanian.com) are right for them, and see their ads from concept through publication. In addition to developing strong presentation and communication skills, ad reps rapidly gain knowledge of Philadelphia through weekly prospecting. We work with all sorts of businesses, from bars and restaurants to the Penn Bookstore to national chains. Our staff works hard (12-15 hours a week) and has a ton of fun doing it. All Ad Reps are paid in the form of commission based on advertisements sold. If you're outgoing, committed, responsible, and looking to work in a professional environment, consider a job with the Advertising Department. For additional information, please contact Monica Silvestre. Marketing The Marketing Department is looking for open-minded individuals who are prepared to bring an enhanced level of creativity and originality to the DP Marketing Team. While no experience is necessary, all applicants should be excited to learn about the ins and outs of the marketing world and be ready to learn about planning and executing marketing projects. Marketing Associates will gain a broad understanding of what the Marketing Department of a corporation does and how it functions. The foremost objective of the Marketing Department is to help Advertising Representatives sell the DP to customers and to investigate advertising trends. In accomplishing these objectives, applicants can expect to work on a wide array of creativity-driven projects, including promoting the DP's products and conducting market research. The time requirement is 8-10 hours per week. For additional information, please contact Shawna Petersen.
Ad Production Staff members of the Production Department primarily design and/or proof all of the advertisements that go into the paper on a daily basis and create advertising campaigns to help the Advertising Representatives sell advertising to new and existing customers. This job requires that you work one-on-one with advertising representatives, members of the Marketing Department and the rest of the production staff. You will develop skills in collaboration and in frequently used computer programs such as QuarkXPress and Photoshop. Training will be provided for all necessary skills. This job is perfect for anyone who is interested in art, design, computers, advertising, or all of the above. Members of the production staff are required to work at least 6 hours a week. Additionally, you will perform other daily tasks that include cash drawer reconciliation, processing accounts receivable and more. The other side of your job focuses on communication.
