The Philadelphia Police arrested an armed man outside of University President Judith Rodin's house Wednesday night after receiving a report that gunshots had been fired in the neighborhood.

Gary Dunmore, who refused to divulge his address to the police, but is unaffiliated with the University, was apprehended around 11 p.m. Wednesday. A witness saw the police remove a gun from the perpetrator's hand in front of the residence located at 38th and Walnut streets.

There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident, and so far police have been unable to verify that any shots were fired in the area. An investigation is ongoing.

A call went out over the police radio around 10:45 p.m., with a report of an armed man who was stopped and taken into custody, University of Pennsylvania Police Department officials said.

"A witness heard a gunshot," said Detective Lance Seidel of the UPPD Southwest Detective Division. "We're not sure if it was [Dunmore's] gun or not."

One student, who was a witness to the arrest, said that he saw "six police cars and a van, and a helicopter up above," while the police were looking around for something.

The police, he said, searched the grass and shrubbery around Eisenlohr Hall, President Rodin's house, but did not appear to find anything.

"There were no spent shell casings out there," Seidel said.

The Philadelphia Police Department has been unable to determine whether the gun had been fired recently, but Seidel said that the weapon would be sent to the Firearms Investigations Unit to be tested.

Depending on the outcome of the arraignment, Dunmore could be held with or without bail, or released outright.

Though the police did not have his official address, Dunmore is likely a resident of a halfway house located on Chestnut Street, Seidel said.

The Southwest Detective Division will be continuing its investigation of the case.

Dunmore remained in custody yesterday at the Southwest Detective Division, located at 55th and Pine streets, and was scheduled to be arraigned at approximately 4 a.m. today, according to the PPD.
