Despite a low level of crime this summer, Penn's campus did face a number of serious incidents during the past few months, including two unrelated cases in Hamilton College House.

On June 23, David Ingraham, 38, was arrested after allegedly stabbing fellow construction worker, Sam Hrynczyszn, 25, during a dispute about time sheets. The victim was treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and survived his injuries, according to Vice President for Public Safety Maureen Rush.

Ingraham's preliminary trial was held over the summer, and the court found that the District Attorney's office presented enough evidence to allow for the case to proceed to a trial phase, Rush said. A trial date should be set soon.

In a separate case, on June 27, a construction worker fell to his death from the eighth floor of scaffolding while working on Hamilton.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration are working with the Facilities Department and the University's Fire and Emergency Services to look into the case, Rush explained.

The situation was examined by OSHA on Aug. 11, though the results from the hearing have not yet been released, Rush said.

"There will be some possible recommendations that will come forward for the contractor," she added, noting that more information on the cases will be released as it becomes available.

In addition, developments have been made in the investigation and legal proceedings regarding a series of assaults that hit campus in late April, primarily in the vicinity of 40th and Pine streets.

Six of the individuals allegedly involved in the assaults -- minors who are West Philadelphia residents -- were apprehended in the spring. While four of them are currently awaiting their trials, scheduled for Sept. 30 at the Juvenile Court at 1801 Vine Street, one faced trial over the summer and received a sentence.

"One of the defendants went before Judge Reynolds on Tuesday, July 29," Rush said. The 17-year-old pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years in state custody.

The additional arrested subject is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 11, Rush said, bringing the total number of arrested individuals up to six.

The individuals charged in the assaults are currently talking to the police about other possible suspects who have not yet been apprehended.

"Our detectives are still on this case," Rush said.

According to University Police, assaults of this nature have not continued.

However, two incidents of assault unrelated to the previous ones were reported. On June 2, four individuals were allegedly attacked -- two near 40th Street and Baltimore Avenue, and two near the Lower Quadrangle gate, located at 3600 Spruce Street. They were allegedly struck with a pipe, and sustained injuries ranging from a fractured skull to a broken jaw.

Eugene Bruton, 25, was arrested in connection with the assaults.
