M. Cross Country, Lieb honored for academics

The Penn men's cross country team was recently honored as a U.S. Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team. Penn sophomore Dusty Lieb led the charge both on the course and in the classroom this year, garnering individual Academic All-America honors.

Lieb finished 26th overall in the 10k at NCAA championships in the fall.

Princeton's Logan may pursue transfer to Yale

Tuesday's edition of The Trenton Times reported that Princeton forward Andre Logan received a release from Tigers coach John Thompson III to pursue transferring to Yale.

Yesterday's The Daily Princetonian, however, quotes Logan's roommate and teammate Ed Persia responding to the contention of Logan transferring to Yale as "an absolute lie."

In the same article, Thompson claims that he had "spoken about it" with Logan but the junior had "not decided to leave."

Logan has been injured for most of his Princeton career and played only three games this season, averaging 12.0 points per game. In 2001-2002, Logan played in 12 games and averaged 9.3 points per game.

PSU's Kuretich wins Penn Relays decathlon

The 109th Penn Relays are off and running, and thus far have proven to be quite competitive.

Yesterday, Penn State's J.T. Kuretich fought from being down in the first day of competition to clinch the decathlon with a total score of 7,056 over the ten events. Kuretich entered yesterday's competition in second place, 38 points behind Lock Haven's Matt Stinson, who finished in second with a total score of 6,838.

The dual between Kuretich and Stinson remained very close throughout, with three lead changes in the event alone.

Out of ten events, Kuretich placed first in only two -- the shot put and pole vault.

That was ultimately enough, however, to propel Kuretich to victory. His 14 foot, 5.25 inch pole vault and a career-best mark of 173'4" in the javelin throw provided a comfortable cushion heading into the final 1,500-meter race, in which he finished 10th with a time of 4:50.17 but remained in first place.

Penn's Mike George came in third overall with 6,766 points, placing first in the 110m hurdles and high jump.

Nelson selected Big 5's Most Outstanding Player

Saint Joseph's University junior Jameer Nelson was named the Big 5's Outstanding Player of the Year by the Herb Good Basketball Club.

Saint Joe's sophomore Delonte West -- who along with Nelson was named Saint Joe's Co-MVP -- was voted to the All-Big 5 first team.

Penn's possibly NBA-bound senior Ugonna Onyekwe joins Nelson and West on the first-team All-Big 5, along with La Salle's Gary Neal and Temple's David Hawkins.

Penn senior Andrew Toole and Penn junior Jeff Schiffner were voted to the second team, along with Villanova's Gary Buchanan and Ricky Wright, Temple's Alex Wesby and Saint Joe's Pat Carroll.

Nelson helped Saint Joe's clinch the Big 5 title -- and helped his cause for Big 5 Outstanding Player -- when he scored a game-high 18 points in a victory over the Quakers on Jan. 25 at the Palestra.

Nelson will receive the Robert V. Geasey Trophy at the Herb Good Basketball Club's 58th Annual Banquet, Monday April 28.

Nelson was also selected as an ESPN.com third-team All-American. He led the Hawks to a 23-7 overall record and a third-consecutive Atlantic 10 regular season championship. Saint Joseph's was ranked 25th in the nation after the regular season and earned a No. 7 seed in the NCAA tournament, where the Hawks fell to Auburn in overtime.
