W. Crew's race v. Brown, Radcliffe cancelled

The weather had the final say this past weekend, as many intercollegiate athletic competitions were cancelled, falling victim to the bitter snowstorm that swept through the northeast.

The Penn women's crew team was one of the many teams affected, as its April 5 meet was cancelled. Brown, seeking a fourth-straight national title, was unable to travel north because of the weather, while Radcliffe, is still awaiting its first competition.

Everything from snow to sleet to rain to thunderstorms made up the fickle weather that hit Boston on race day. Despite this hindrance, the Quakers managed to row in an informal race against Radcliffe on the Charles River, but had to end only halfway through due to piercing sleet pellets resulting in dangerously low visibility.

"We were pretty disappointed because this was the second weekend in a row the varsity team couldn't compete," co-captain Sarah-Jane Irwin said.

"This however will only make us more hungry for a win when we finally do get to race."

The weather may once again be the determining factor as the Quakers head to Syracuse, N.Y. -- upstate New York having been hit hardest by the storm -- this weekend to challenge Northeastern.
