M. Lax's MVP goalie no longer a student at Penn

The Penn men's lacrosse team notched its first winning season last year since 1989.

The Quakers garnered nine victories, a top-20 national ranking and five players on the All-Ivy team.

Two of the five All-Ivy's -- senior co-captains Alex Kopicki and Steve Brown -- returned this season.

But their fellow-classmate and reigning I.W. Burnham II Award winner -- presented to the program's Most Outstanding Player -- is no longer on the team's roster.

In fact, Ryan Kelly is not currently a student at Penn, according to the University Registrar's office.

Kelly's name was listed in the Penn Directory at the beginning of the year but has since been removed. It is unknown whether the Red and Blue's star goaltender left Penn during or before fall semester this year.

"I'd rather talk about the guys that are on my team this year," first-year Penn coach Brian Voelker said on March 4.

Sophomore goalie Denis Cole would not comment when asked about Kelly.

Last season, Kelly, then a junior, started all 13 games for Penn, including each of its six Ivy matches. The former Wharton student posted a 7.84 GAA, with 150 saves and a .605 save percentage.

The three-time All-County high school goalie was named to the Ivy Weekly Honor Roll twice last season. Kelly earned the award for his second time on April 21, after posting a career-high 20 saves against then-No. 4 Syracuse. The Orangemen won the national championship last year.

Penn's most notable victory came in its first game of the season against then-No. 11 Notre Dame, 7-6. Kelly had 15 saves in the win.

But the Deer Park, N.Y., native left Penn before his final season of eligibility was scheduled to start.

Senior Mark Gannon now protects the net for the Red and Blue. Gannon played in just four games last season, and only two games in his freshman and sophomore seasons combined.

This year, with Kelly's departure, Gannon's role has changed dramatically, starting all 13 games in goal for Penn (4-4 overall, 1-2 Ivy).

He made a career-high 13 saves against both Army and No. 2 Princeton.
