The Penn men's golf team finished eighth in the 53rd Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships held in San Diego, Calif., on March 10-11.

Fourteen teams participated in the tournament held at the beautiful, hilly Santaluz Club. Each team played 36 holes Monday and 18 holes Tuesday. The four lowest of five scores were counted toward the team total for each round. The Red and Blue had a 54 hole total of 918, a score 33 shots higher than first place finisher Colorado Springs.

Penn co-captain Chad Perman finished with the eighth best individual score. Perman shot 72, 75, and 71.

"I'm very pleased to see that Chad has picked up right where he left off," coach Heath Davidson said.

Perman averaged 72 and led the team throughout the fall.

Co-captain Peyton Wallace held his own, improving each round. Freshman standout Derek Rogers had trouble during his first round but kept his composure and shot a two-under 69 in the final round of competition.

In addition to the five players competing for the team score, Penn played its remaining three golfers individually, giving every member of the team a chance to practice.

Following the tournament, the Quakers practiced on several other San Diego courses before heading to Los Angeles Thursday night. Between playing local courses and hitting the driving range, the squad had a very productive practice sessions in L.A.

"We got our golf muscles going again," Perman said.

Davidson echoed his thoughts.

"We got a lot of the rust off," he said.

The team returned Sunday evening pleased to see warm weather at home. Hopes are high that the weather will allow the golfers to practice this week on their home course, the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

Next on the calendar for the Quakers is the Towson Invitational March 29-30, one of three District II matches this spring. The following weekend's tournament will be at Navy.

The weekend of April 11-12 marks the Princeton Invitational, the team's last chance to play under tournament conditions before the Ivy League championships.

Off to a good start, the Quakers are in position to make a run at the Ivy title and advance to the NCAA Regional championships.
