Popular comedian Margaret Cho may reportedly be coming to Penn next month, according to members of the Asian Pacific Student Coalition and Asian Pacific American Heritage Week.
Group representatives said that Cho will possibly perform on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Irvine Auditorium, as part of Asian Pacific American Heritage Week, a week-long celebration sponsored by the Coalition.
Although representatives have cited the Social Planning and Events Committee as a co-sponsor for the event, SPEC President Kevin Meyers would not comment on whether or not Cho might be coming.
Cho's career was given a kick-start when she won a comedy contest in which first prize was the opportunity to open for Jerry Seinfeld. She received the American Comedy Award for Best Female Comedian in 1994, and starred in her own short-lived ABC sitcom All-American Girl during the mid-1990s.
Her 1999 Off-Broadway show, I'm The One That I Want, was both a box office and critical success and was turned into a concert film.
According to Julia Lee, vice chairwoman of cultural affairs for the Coalition, Cho is currently on tour in the United States and is planning to be in the Philadelphia area during the celebration.
Christine Choi, co-chairwoman for the heritage week, said that the Coalition was first approached by SPEC with the idea to bring Cho to campus.
"SPEC expressed interest in bringing Margaret Cho as a well-known comedian who's also of Asian-American background," Choi said.
The performance is also marked down for Feb. 23 on a tentative schedule for Asian Pacific American Heritage Week.
Asian Pacific American Heritage Week is scheduled to begin on Friday, Feb. 22.
The week will kick off with a concert from a yet-to-be-announced Asian-American musical group and will feature Asian-American activist Helen Zia as the keynote speaker.
