A male University student landed in jail early yesterday morning after allegedly assaulting a Temple University student on the 3900 block of Spruce Street.
Engineering sophomore Kevin Burns was arrested after allegedly striking the Temple student during an argument, according to University Police. Officers arrived at 3924 Spruce St., shortly before 3 a.m.
The Temple student was taken to the Wills Eye Surgery Center at Presbyterian Hospital for treatment, where he reportedly underwent surgery yesterday for a severe laceration to his left cornea.
Burns was arrested and taken to the Philadelphia Police Department's 18th District headquarters at 55th and Pine streets for processing.
Burns said he was arraigned yesterday morning and released at 9 p.m. last night.
The 19-year-old intends to dispute the charges.
"It's definitely not true," Burns said.
Burns, a Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brother, maintained that he did not strike the Temple student, but that somebody mistakenly identified him after police arrived.
According to Chris Beale, another Pi Kappa Alpha brother, the alleged incident took place after individuals -- including the Temple student -- allegedly threw a bottle at the Pi Kappa Alpha house at 3916 Spruce Street.
"Some kids from that party" at 3924 Spruce "were walking by the front of our house," Beale said. "One of them smashed a bottle and tossed it up the front porch."
"Some people who were sitting in front of our house went down there," Beale continued. "One of the kids' friends who threw the bottle had something done with his eye."
According to Burns, he went outside "because of the altercation."
Burns agreed that it was a bottle that caused the Temple student's injuries, but denies that he threw the bottle.
"Everybody was yelling," Burns said. "I don't even know who was struck."
According to Burns, who said he will speak to a lawyer today, his court date has been tentatively set for Sept. 24.
