Quakers nip Big Green

Blocked extra point preserves victory

HANOVER, N.H. -- Thanks to a blocked extra point, the Penn football team escaped Dartmouth's Memorial Field with a 21-20 victory today. Both the Quakers and the Big Green came out firing on offense, as the teams traded 80-yard touchdown drives to open the game. In fact, it wasn't until the fifth series of the game -- when Dartmouth running back Michael Gratch fumbled -- that either team's offense failed to find the end zone. The Quakers capitalized on the Big Green turnover when senior running back Kris Ryan scored his third touchdown of the day from two yards out. Ryan ran for 134 yards on 34 carries, and was responsible for each of Penn's scores. Each team's defense adjusted, and brought the offense to a virtual standstill. Penn squandered two scoring opportunities as freshman kicker Bryan Arguello missed field goals of 28 and 36 yards. In the fourth quarter, Gratch scored what should have been the game-tying touchdown from the Penn two-yard line. However, Quakers defensive lineman Kyle Chaffin broke through the line to block the Big Green's extra-point try.
