Pirates take Young in MLB Draft

With the 89th overall pick in the Monday's Major League Baseball Draft, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected Princeton's two-sport phenom Chris Young and, in the process, gave the flamethrower plenty to think about over his summer vacation.

Young, who was a unanimous first team selection to the All-Ivy teams in both baseball and basketball this past year, was pleasantly surprised by his third round selection.

"It's something I've been dreaming about since I was a little kid," Young told Princeton sports information from his home in Dallas. "I was trying not to be anxious once the draft started. I was very pleased. I didn't think I'd go as high as I did."

The elation of the Pirates' pick won't last too long for Young, as the rising junior now is faced with a potentially life-changing decision.

The Ivy League, unlike other athletic conferences in the nation, does not allow its student-athletes an opportunity to have a professional contract in one sport while still lettering in another.

As a result, if Young does elect to sign with the Pirates, he will need to relinquish his starting center position with the Tigers basketball team.
