M. Hoops, W. Hoops top preseason Ivy polls The men topped the poll in convincing fashion, earning all 16 first-place votes for a total of 128 points. Princeton placed second with 105 points. Dartmouth, Cornell, Harvard, Brown, Yale and Columbia rounded out the list. The Quakers, the 1998-99 Ivy champs, return three starters in center Geoff Owens, shooting guard Matt Langel and point guard Michael Jordan. They also welcome the arrival of six heralded freshman, as well as the eligibility of transfer Oggie Kapetanovic. The Quakers open their season at Kentucky in the Preseason NIT on November 17. The game will be broadcast on ESPN. The women, who return the top two scorers in the Ivies in '99 with Ivy League Player of the Year Diana Caramanico and first-team All-Ivy guard Mandy West, earned nine first-place votes and topped the poll with 114 points. Princeton, with six first-place votes, played bridesmaid to the Quakers in the women's poll as well, finishing a narrow second with 113 points. Hoops The schedule for the "Ivy League Friday Nights" package on DirecTV was announced yesterday and the men's basketball team figures heavily into the plan. Of the nine men's games being broadcast, four feature the Quakers, including the season finale against Princeton on March 7. The Penn women will also be broadcast against Princeton that night, one of just two Ivy women's games DirecTV will carry all season. -- E.M.
