SHS offers flu shots in advance of season According to Student Health Director Marjeanne Collins, early reports of an outbreak have led officials to believe that this year's flu will hit the East Coast in November. The $5 flu vaccine shots are now available at the Student Health center, located in the Penn Tower Hotel, and those covered by Penn's Student Health Insurance Plan are eligible to receive them at no cost. Collins pointed out that since the flu virus comes in new strands each year, people must receive the vaccination annually in order to fully protect themselves. "It's one of those vaccines that change each year depending on what strand comes," Collins said. Possible side effects from the injection include tenderness in the area of the shot as well as a small chance of a low-grade fever or headache. While students are not generally members of the highest-risk group -- which includes those with depressed immune systems, breathing difficulties or heart problems -- the shot is recommended to anyone who lives in close quarters such as dormitories or shared apartments. Collins pointed out that people can further protect themselves from the virus by frequently washing their hands, avoiding large crowds and being careful about sharing glasses. "If you have the flu, you should definitely stay home," she advised, noting that those who are sick should get lots of rest and stay hydrated. Although the shots will be available by appointment until the end of flu season in late winter, Student Health officials said that they are planning a major outreach November 11 at four on-campus sites. That day, both flu and meningococcal vaccines will be given at Van Pelt Library, McClelland Hall in the Quadrangle and Harrison and Hill college houses. -- Eric Dash
