EDITORIAL: The customer is always rights

We welcome recent changes at Eat at Joe's as a sign that the diner is listening to student concerns. Until now, the diner has failed to stay open late into the night -- the very reason it was brought to campus last summer. But plans to extend the diner's hours until 3 a.m. every night will provide students with a much-needed alternative to late night Wawa runs. However, we continue to believe that Penn needs a true 24-hour diner, and we hope that University and company officials follow through on their pledge to explore that possibility. Other changes at the diner are equally welcome, including a revamped menu and cheaper prices. By their nature, late-night diners serve customers more concerned with availability and price than gourmet food. The changes are a sign that Eat at Joe's is beginning to respond to its customers, and we are pleased to see them doing so. Another sign that the company is paying attention -- and further evidence that Eat at Joe's is growing into its role as a college diner -- is the decision to provide free coffee during afternoon reading hours, extending from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. In a world of stories about oblivious and unresponsive stores, it is always welcome to see a business that adapts to its customers. We hope Eat at Joe's continues to find new ways to satisfy its customers, 24 hours a day.
