EDITORIAL: Please, sir, may I use a computer?

Wharton's new policy punishes students who need computer access just as much as Wharton students do. Unfortunately, the computers in Rosengarten are all being used. None are free in the dorm, either. Guess it's time for a short walk to one of the lush computer labs in Steiny-D. But only if you're in Wharton. Otherwise, it's just tough luck. At least that's the message the Wharton School is sending with the announcement of a new policy requiring computer users to be enrolled in Wharton classes. Though the rule is couched in terms of addressing "security concerns," the intended effect is clear: being a student at the University just isn't enough to be able to use some of Penn's finest equipment. Instead of banning College, Nursing and Engineering students, Wharton officials should have required that all students -- regardless of their school -- receive an authorization number to ensure better accountability. But now that the mandate has been handed down, administrators should make it a priority to get more -- and better -- computers throughout campus. Computer labs must be open all night and have the latest technologies so that all students can get their work done.
