John Owens, a physician not affiliated with the University, tentatively cleared the sophomore to play in mid-March. In addition to practicing while wearing a heart monitor, Geoff Owens underwent weeks of computer-monitored exercise on a cardiovascular circuit in Owens' Woodbury, Pa., office. University officials cleared Owens to play after receiving reports from a second doctor in Boston. Neither doctor has yet been available for comment. Owens, who has been excited by his performance in daily pick-up games since learning of his fate Monday, feels confident of his health and reports that his parents are also happy. "I was so excited just to get back on the court and run up and down with the guys again," Owens said. After redshirting this season, Owens -- who averaged 2.36 blocks per game in Ivy League contests in '97 -- will resume play for the Quakers in 1998-99 as a sophomore. -- Eric Moskowitz
