The Daily Pennsylvanian

'DP' gets top journalism award

The Daily Pennsylvanian More than 430 newspapers entered the competition for the annual award, begun in 1982, which recognizes "outstanding achievement in the writing, editing, design and production of a superlative student publication." The awards program is administered by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in New York City. In November, the DP won the Pacemaker Award as one of the top five college papers in the country for the first time in almost a decade. That prize is sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation. This is the first time in the DP's history that it has won both awards for the same year. The DP had previously won the Gold Crown in 1987, 1993 and 1994, and the Pacemaker in 1990. "Winning both awards is a wonderful testament to the hard work and dedication of the DP's editors, reporters, business managers and staffers," said DP Executive Editor Michael Mugmon. "I really appreciate the time and efforts of everyone who has worked on the paper over the past year," he added. The other Gold Crown winners, who were announced late last week, include: Indiana University at Bloomington's Indiana Daily Student; the University of Oregon at Eugene's Oregon Daily Emerald; The Ball State Daily News of Ball State University in Muncie, Ind.; The Michigan Daily of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; The Oklahoma Daily at the University of Oklahoma at Norman and the NECC Observer of Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill, Mass.
