EDITORIAL: Become part of the community

Students must go beyond suggestions in the 'Tips for Living Off Campus' pamphlet. Now students need to start making an effort. In the next week or so, those living off campus should expect to receive a pamphlet -- compiled by University administrators, student government leaders and community groups -- offering tips on trash collection, meeting neighbors, dealing with landlords, holding parties and safety. It's also on The Daily Pennsylvanian Interactive at http://dailypennsylvanian. com. Take the time to read it and think about it. Don't add it to the litter on the streets. Some of the information in the brochure may be helpful, such as how to avoid a trash fine or how to request a safety audit. Its effectiveness at bridging the gap between students and long-term area residents, however, will likely be limited. Students need to go beyond suggestions in the pamphlet to become a part of their neighborhoods. Here are some things you can do: Join the Spruce Hill Community Association, which encompasses the area from 40th to 46th streets between Market Street and Woodland Avenue. Go to next month's "Getting to Know Your Neighbor" reception, sponsored by the University and the SHCA. Officials did not sufficiently publicize the last few events in this series, and thus the low student turnout has been embarrassing. Or volunteer your time in area schools, community clinics or with local voter registration drives. Although rents could be lower and security could be better, University City is a good place to live. And with more respect from students, it could be even better.
