M. Hoops to offer its own version of 'Madness' "Palestra Pandemonium," the Quakers' take on a tradition popular at several big basketball schools around the country, will begin a bit early than most -- at 7 p.m. Since Saturday signals the beginning of basketball practice for the season, colleges holding to the true Midnight Madness tradition have their celebrations on Friday night. "But we're not a traditional Midnight Madness team," coach Fran Dunphy said. "It will still be effective to gain enthusiasm for the season." Although Dunphy said he has not yet outlined the event with the team members, he believes they are looking forward it. "They feel the same way [the Athletic Department does]," Dunphy said. "They're very appreciative of the students who show support for them at games, so this is a way for them to thank and meet their fans." Athletic Department Marketing and Special Events Coordinator Katrina Dowidchuk said, "It's going to be a fun kick-off event -- open to the entire community -- and the first glimpse of the 1997-98 Quakers." Following Dunphy's brief introduction of the team -- which includes 14 returning members and several new players -- students will have a chance to participate in dunking and three-point shot contests with the Quakers. Prizes will be awarded to contest winners. --Becca Iverson
