To the Editor: I agree with Giulian when she remarks that one of college's most fundemental lessons for the individual is achieving some measure of autonomy and independence. I disagree, however, with Giulian when she says that since we are students in a city crime will happen and students will be shot. How utterly repugnant and ridiculous. Just because I have chosen to come to the University of Pennsylvania I have to sacrifice some measure of security? Certainly not. Yes, it's unfortunate that crime does occur here. But that doesn't mean that we should just sit back and accept it. If carrying around a cash debit card -- such as the PennCard -- is some how infringing upon my maturation, then I have to disagree with the her idea of "adulthood." All Giulian's column has proven is that blatant assertions are irresponsible? and dangerous. Jason Schaechter College '00
