Handsome Dan dies premature death Until a replacement can be found, Dan's predecessor, showing true devotion to the cause, will come out of retirement to cheer on the Elis at the Yale Bowl. – John Christner Maloney, Allen get shots with new NBA squads Matt Maloney, the former Penn basketball star who was 1995 Ivy League Player of the Year, and Jerome Allen, his predecessor in 1993and 1994 may yet get chances to play in the NBA, with the Houston Rockets and New Jersey Nets. Maloney, who spent all of last season with the CBA's Grand Rapids Mackers, has joined the team's rookies and free agents in a summer league trip to Utah. He had been working out in Houston in the weeks before. Last year, Maloney was the very last guard cut from the Golden St. Warriors. Allen, of course, played in 41 games last season with the Minnesota Timberwolves. But after Flip Saunders replaced Bill Blair as coach, Allen's days in Minnesota were numbered. Although he has not signed with New Jersey, Allen did participate on the Nets' summer league team. – Jordan Smith Two ex-Quakers medal in Atlanta Two former Penn rowers brought home bronze medals last week at the Centennial Olympic Games. Jeff Pfaendtner, a 1990 Penn graduate, placed third in the men's lightweight four event. After graduating from Penn in 1993, Janusz Hooker claimed a medal for his home country of Australia in the men's quad skull event last week.
