Playing at No. 1 singles, Quakers sophomore Marc Fisicaro dominated the first set and held off Yale's Jonathan Beardsley in the second set for an impressive 6-1, 7-6 win over an opponent with professional experience. Freshman Udi Kish continued Penn's success with another straight set victory over Yale's Mark Warnken, 7-6, 6-4. However, the rest of Penn's singles lineup did not fare as well, with junior Brad Goldberg, senior co-captain Jeff Jackson, junior J.J. Cramer, and freshman David Schwartzman all losing their matches. Both Goldberg and Schwartzman forced their matches to three sets, while Jackson and Cramer lost 6-3, 7-6 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively. The Penn doubles team of Kish and Cramer took the No. 2 doubles match 8-6, but the doubles point went to Yale, with the No. 1 doubles team of Fisicaro and Goldberg and the No. 3 doubles team Jackson and Schwartzman losing 8-2 and 8-4, respectively. But the next day, the Quakers played one of their better matches of the year, winning a 4-3 decision over Brown. "I'm very proud of my boys this weekend, after dropping a tough one to Army two weeks ago, then losing to Dartmouth, Harvard and then Yale, we showed tremendous character coming from behind to defeat Brown," Penn coach Gene Miller said. Although Penn lost two of the three doubles matches, the Quakers got the job done in singles, taking four of the six matches. Victorious for Penn were Fisicaro, who beat Brown's Cornel Catrina 6-2, 6-3, and Kish, who was also the victor in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. While Goldberg and Jackson fell to the Bears at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, the Quakers won their final two matches. Cramer blew past Brown's Maucos Rollan 6-2, 6-3, and Schwartzman beat Brown's Jeff Barnes in three sets. Penn's come-from-behind victory leaves the Quakers 2-4 in the Ivy League, with one more league match remaining. The Quakers will host Columbia this weekend.
