In his first months as acting director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, Scott Reikofski has met with numerous members of the University's Greek scene -- both to discuss ongoing issues and to introduce himself. "I see myself as being a resource person and an advocate for the Greek system," he said. Reikofski -- who became director after the departure of former OFSA Director Tricia Phaup over the summer -- said he believes in the educational value of the Greek system, and its ability to foster leadership and social skills. He also said he plans to run for the permanent OFSA post at the end of the semester. Reikofski said a major part of his job is to ensure that the Greek system has a role in the future of higher education. He faces a number of issues this year, particularly helping fraternities adapt to the new spring rush, and fostering adherence to the "Bring Your Own Beer" policy. "Like any change, it will take some planning on their part," he said of BYOB. Reikofski also plans to encourage greater cooperation between Greeks. "I hope they continue to come together, and have a good understanding of one another," he said. More community service projects and a better rapport with other campus groups are also on his immediate agenda. Reikofski said that he appreciates the work done by Phaup, which he said helped improve a system that had been ailing when she first began her position. "I am very impressed with the staff Tricia put together," he said. "It makes me feel confident and it should make the students feel confident." Reikofski's work with Greek affairs began when he was an undergraduate at the University of Northern Colorado, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity -- a society that he said pioneered the creation of non-hazing pledge practices. After graduating in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and minors in communications and music, he obtained a master's degree from Bowling Green University in 1984. He has worked in the student life departments at several universities, including the University of Toledo, the University of Tampa, and the University of Findlay. He came to the University in July 1993 to serve as the assistant director of the Office of Student Life Activities and Facilities. In addition to his work with the Greek system, he is also working to obtain his Ph.D. in human sexuality from the University. According to Associate Vice Provost for University Life Larry Moneta, Reikofski's interpersonal skills make him ideal for the job. "He really understands the needs of the students he serves," he said. Moneta also praised him for his impressive administrative skills -- such as budgeting and staff management -- that he acquired in his years of work with student affairs. "The combination of those administrative and human skills makes him superb," Moneta said. "He's done a great job picking up the wonderful work Tricia Phaup had done." Reikofski said that although the job has been extremely hectic in these first months, he anticipates he will enjoy his stay as director.
