Compiled by DP staff Twelve students from Shaw Middle School and their teacher, Mary Jane Smyrl, attended the event, which was held at the DP's 4015 Walnut Street office. "It went extraordinarily well," said DP Executive Editor Charles Ornstein, a College senior. "The students are extremely bright and very interested in learning more about the media, personally and professionally." For the past two semesters, the students participating in Saturday School have published a special supplement to the DP, with their own stories and photographs. "What makes this program so meaningful is that students work together with other students to produce something tangible," Ornstein said. This semester, the DP will hold three more sessions for the students -- geared toward teaching the basics about writing, photography, art and design. Media representatives and school officials are also expected to take part. The Center for Community Partnerships and the West Philadelphia Improvement Corps are also active with the program. The DP program is one of a number of collaborative programs between Penn students and the Shaw school. The next Saturday School session will be held October 21.
