LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: The Need for Understanding

To the Editor: My aim is not to condemn either, but to point out the inconsistencies in responses. What is most disturbing to me is the lack of support I have witnessed between different communities here at Penn. And we wonder why we have been unable to bridge the gaps between the many communities that exist on this campus, each with specific goals and agendas, but all part of a larger Penn community. It doesn't feel like it, does it? Perhaps if we suspended our impulsive negative reactions for a moment, we could find it within ourselves to celebrate with one another and offer our encouragement and support rather than our disdain. To the newly initiated sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., I congratulate you and wish you much luck in your endeavors this year. Christina Cordero Wharton '95 Sigma Lambda Upsilon member n To the Editor: In recent years, there has been a rash of complaints about disturbances that appear to target members of the Big-C groups on campus. Initially, like most students, we lacked a clear understanding of Big-C activities and celebrations that occur throughout the year. However, through recent interactions with Big-C leaders and members, we have developed a clearer perspective of those activities that have received negative attention. These events are culturally-based and represent a celebration of meaningful days and traditions in black and Latino heritage. The Big-C is an incredibly important asset to the Greek community and the University. Its chapters embody the philanthropic, academic and community spirit that the InterFraternity Council believes is an invaluable part of our collegiate environment. As a community, we must take the steps to understand and support the ideas, values and traditions of all groups on campus. With regard to Superblock disturbances, one must consider that any event that occurs on campus may disturb one group or another. We believe the Big-C events have received an inequitable amount of negative coverage without acknowledging the value and infrequency of these cultural celebrations. We would ask that students take the time to understand the meaning and merits of the Big-C and their activities on campus. In addition, we would encourage all students to join us in supporting the Big-C and their endeavors. Thank you. Dave Treat College '96 IFC President Josh Gottheimer College '97 IFC Judicial Manager In Defense of Elena Dilapi To the Editor: I would like to respond to the reports in the DP concerning Elena Dilapi and the Penn Women's Center's so-called support of racism. As a foreign student, I have known and worked with Elena Dilapi and the Penn Women's Center for more than five years while developing and organizing a group for international graduate women students. Throughout this period I have never met anyone more dedicated than Elena Dilapi in her commitment to promote understanding and respect among people from different countries and the United States. Many of us from around the world, irrespective of our color, beliefs or opinions have always been welcomed at the Penn Women's Center. Elena Dilapi and the Penn Women's Center's continued support and encouragement have made it possible for the participants of totally diverse backgrounds in terms of race, nationality and religion to have the opportunity to come together for the many productive (and very much enjoyable) discussions which have promoted awareness of our own attitudes and behaviors and led to deeper understanding and respect for each other. I think the University is fortunate in having someone as totally committed and dedicated as Elena Dilapi For promoting understanding and fighting racism and bigotry.
