The Penn men's tennis season is upon us, and the outlook from all involved is very positive. The team is led by senior captains Marc Schecter and Neil Aaronson. Coach Gene Miller feels the captains are very important to the team's chemistry and sees them as two of the best he's ever had. Miller is also extremely pleased with the six new freshmen on the squad. The team's combination of strong leadership and new blood appear to be mixing well. Penn takes to the courts this Saturday and Sunday at Swarthmore for the Tim Berman Invitational. At the moment, the Quakers are working hard, playing matches against teammates and working on conditioning. Miller is still unsure of the lineup. He will base it mostly on tournament results and somewhat on matches during practice. Miller feels competitive results are more important than intrasquad matches because they represent true match play. The season will come to a high point at the East Coast Athletic Conference championship in February at Princeton. Miller took three players -- Michigan transfer Joel Silman, Schecter and sophomore Brad Goldberg -- to the Notre Dame Invitational last weekend. Miller called it "one of their best showings so far." Silman made it to the third round in one of his singles draws and lost in the first round of the other. Schecter advanced to the second round of both his draws. The best results from the weekend came from the doubles team of Silman and Schecter. They reached the semifinals, eventually losing to Notre Dame's No. 1 team. The Irish annually turn out nationally ranked players. "If the team doesn't worry about the results, but worries about the steps taken to get there," Miller said, "everything should work out great."
