Whipped cream Twister, "moon bounce" boxing and a Cypress Hill concert might sound like child's play, but don't be surprised if you see various University administrators partying in the Quad alongside students. Though Spring Fling is traditionally considered a party weekend for students only, many University administrators said they too will take time to enjoy the campus festivities. Associate Vice Provost for University Life Larry Moneta said last night he intends to enjoy all of Fling's activities, including the Cypress Hill concert. He said he has been listening to his son's Cypress Hill compact disc in preparation for the concert, and he's even bringing his two kids to the concert. "I firmly believe Penn needs and wants more spirit," he said. "The bottom line for me is, Penn is not a playful enough institution and I love these moments when there is playfulness." Acting VPUL Valarie Swain-Cade McCoullum said last night she is looking forward to going to "as much stuff as possible" over the weekend. McCoullum said events like Spring Fling and the recent VPUL-sponsored Quaker basketball team rally are essential in bringing a community atmosphere to campus. "I think it's real important that we continue to focus on the tough issues like security and mail and all the other issues that we are grappling with, but there's also a time for us to come together as a community and really enjoy ourselves," she said. "I think that those kinds of common experiences are a wonderful mechanism for building traditions and celebrating ourselves." McCoullum added that in the next year, she wants to "try to see how we can expand the number of campus-wide activities that will bring people together to celebrate ourselves." For College of Arts and Sciences Dean Matthew Santirocco, Fling will be a little closer to home. Santirocco resides in the Quadrangle, and expects to poke his head out of his residence often during what he calls "the best time to be in the Quad." He added that while Fling is a great before-finals break for students, he hopes they will act responsibly. "[Fling] provides a good relief, one last time, of the tension that's building up before exams," he said. "I just hope it doesn't become an excuse for inappropriate drinking."
