Coda Nostra Keeps with Glee Club tradition

Coda Nostra, the Penn Glee Club's spring show, opens tonight at Zellerbach Theater in the Annenberg Center. Keeping with traditional Glee Club style, the show will offer singing, dancing and plenty of humor for a wide range of audiences. The Glee Club is well-known for its large broadway numbers and choice of classic songs. Cast members say these aspects will be well incorporated into tonight's show. "This group is founded in good choral singing but we leave plenty of time for laughing, dancing and comedy also," said College junior Seth Bloom. The show was written by College junior Daniel Coelho who said the story-line is original, but most of the musical numbers performed are favorite songs from the past. The story takes place in the mid 1930's on the streets of Chicago where a bunch of gangsters are looking for a quick way to make a buck. These gangsters find themselves betting on a losing boxer and eventually getting themselves into financial straits. Slap stick comedy, bright costumes and large dance numbers will make the plot come to life in a typical broadway style. Cast members said they are excited for this spring show because it was almost fully produced by student effort. "This show was student written and almost fully student directed," College senior Scott Romeika said. "We've worked hard and we're just trying to have fun." Based on old movies and an Untouchables theme, Coelho says the original story line will give the perfect setting for great music and funny lines. "I came up with the idea for the plot and we arranged the songs to fit with the story line," Coelho said. "It's pretty close to a real broadway show." Coehlo said that he hopes the audience appreciates the musical quality of the show and still gets a big laugh out of it. "There's something for everybody in the Glee Club Show," Bloom said. "It's singing, dancing and comedy all wrapped up and handed to you with smiles. Coda Nostra opens tonight at 8 p.m. and will run tonight, Friday and Saturday and tickets are on sale for $6 on the Walk.
