The University's annual Martin Luther King Commemorative Program will kick off today with the painting of banners to be hung Monday on Locust Walk. "Last year, 15 student groups came together," he said. "We're figuring on 75 to 100 people [this year]. "The purpose of the banner painting is two-fold," Kretschman added. "It commemorates Martin Luther King and brings different campus groups together for community service activities." College senior Tom McManus, chairman of Quadramics, echoed Kretschman's sentiments. "It's very important that people recognize Martin Luther King Day," he said. "Especially here at Penn, where we have no specific days off for holidays like this – the day could go by without people knowing it had happened." Materials for the banners will be available in the second-floor auditorium of the Christian Association from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. today. – Lisa Levenson
