"Sybil," a University sophomore, was stranded in Rio de Janiero this summer . . . apparently with photographers from Hustler magazine. In the magazine's November issue the model, whom the magazine describes as "luscious," is featured in an eight-page spread entitled, "Sybil: Sun-kissed." She is nude in all the photos, posing on the beach, in a pool and on a sun deck, at times with citrus fruit. A spokesperson from Hustler said yesterday that the magazine's editorial policy does not allow any information about the models to be released for "legal reasons." "[We are] not permitted ever to give out any information on our models," said Jean Diamond, an editorial department staffer. "You can imagine the calls we get." Sybil was unable to be reached for comment. There is no one named Sybil listed in the Class of 1995 Directory, but it is possible that Sybil is a transfer student or that she entered the University before or after September of last year. "If she is a student at Penn, it's an unfortunate reflection on the University," Admissions Dean Willis Stetson said. "My hope is that not many people read Hustler." University Life officials said yesterday they also had doubts about whether or not Sybil is actually a University student. "If it is false information, then they're trying to ride on the coattails of a prestigious university," said Larry Moneta, associate vice provost for University life. "[Although], the clientele that reads Hustler probably isn't as interested in where she comes from as what she looks like." Moneta predicted that the text accompanying photos in the magazine are read by one-tenth of its purchasers. Hustler, a magazine considered more hard-core than Playboy and Penthouse, is normally available at 7-11 convenience stores around campus, but 7-11 representatives said this week that the November issue is selling fast. Ali Baig, owner of the 7-11 at 42nd and Walnut streets, said the 50 or more copies he received were quickly bought, in most cases by men. He said the magazine does not usually sell so well and that even the extra copies he kept in the store's storage room were sold out. "It doesn't [usually] sell that fast," said Baig, who was told by University students who purchased Hustler that a University student is featured in the current issue. Eric Brooks, a part-time worker in the 7-11 at 38th and Chestnut streets, also knew about Sybil. "A lot of people have been talking about it," Brooks said. He said he has not seen the photos because, at age 17, it is illegal for him to purchase the magazine. WaWa does not carry Hustler. University students said yesterday that they do not think the photos of their alleged classmate will have a negative impact on the University. "I think it's a personal choice [Sybil made] that I don't agree with," said College freshman Jeanne Levin. "[However], it doesn't reflect upon the University." Nina Rahbani, a College sophomore, said that although Sybil chose to be photographed nude, she personally believes pornography exploits women. "[Pornography] puts across the message that we're just surface value," Rahbani said. "I don't think it's good for women as a sex." She added that she does not think Hustler readers will associate Sybil with the University in the future. The photo essay portrays the tanned and oiled Sybil in various erotic poses. The model is quoted as saying, "If my folks saw I've got no tan line, they'd kill me!" "Besides," she adds. "Do you know how cold Philadelphia is this time of year?"
