Paul LaMonica devoted his recent column, "Playing Poker on a Tightrope" (DP 9/15/92), to arguing for the freedom to call people racial and ethnic slurs. In his utopian vision, chauvinism is an inalienable right of all people. LaMonica describes these stigmatizing epithets as "harmless jokes." I bet most people of color would disagree. I predict that if he went around calling people these names, he would get his face bashed in repeatedly for being a white, racist punk. Education can promote cultural awareness in the minds of rational beings. But, LaMonica's column makes it crystal clear that we must fight stubborn, arrogant white males like him.
