This letter is in response to Johnathan Steinmetz's editorial "Ebony and Ivy" (DP 9/11/92). Steinmetz leaves the impression that all African-American students live in DuBois College House. DuBois contains a total of 117 African-American students, which is less than 20 percent of the African-American enrollment at Penn. Also, the college house contains approximately 50 African-American freshmen, which is about one-third of the African-American freshman class. Steinmetz comes to the conclusion that African-American students who live in DuBois receive housing privileges which the rest of West Campus does not. At DuBois, we go through the same housing process as every other college house. Is it not true that any sophomore, junior or senior has the option of living with whom he pleases? I wonder if Steinmetz chose his roommates for the 1992-93 school year. Finally, the greatest misconception is that the DuBois College House is exclusively African-American. Any Penn student who wishes to live in the DuBois College House need only to apply. It is a very simple process -- just ask the white students who actually live in DuBois College House.
