Officers arrest student for breaking through

University Police officers arrested a male undergraduate student who drove his bicycle through a security line set up for Presidential Candidate Bill Clinton's visit to campus, Lieutenant Susan Holmes said yesterday. Holmes said the reason behind the student's action is still unclear. Officers stopped pedestrian traffic yesterday on 37th Street, between Walnut and Locust streets to ensure Clinton's safety as he drove to Annenberg Center for his 11:45 a.m. speech. There were several students waiting on 37th Street to catch a glimpse of Clinton. Holmes said police informed them that they would have to stay behind the barricade. After standing behind the lines for a few minutes, the student bolted through the security line on his bicycle, Holmes said. The student then laughed, and said something to the effect of, "So arrest me." Bicycle patrol officers were more than willing to comply to the student's request, apprehending him at the corner of 37th Street and Locust Walk. They charged him with disorderly conduct. The incident occurred moments before the motorcade containing Clinton was expected to arrive. Police officers issued the student a subpoena for a court date in the future and released him. They also informed Vice Provost for University Life Kim Morrisson's office of the incident. Morrisson said last night she did not know about the incident. Tim Tompkins, president of Wharton MBA public policy and non-profit management club which organized the event, said yesterday that he was also unaware of the incident. Tompkins would not speculate about the student's motives, but he did say he thought the man was probably harmless. "I'm sure he wasn't a threat to anyone, but from a secret service point of view, they don't know if he's a threat or not," he said. (CUT LINE) Please see SECURITY, page 5A SECURITY, from page 1A
