Bill Madison's column reeks of misogyny. Does Madison actually begrudge women their right to ensure their own safety on this campus? He seems to take offense at the idea that women may ride Escort when, according to his estimation, it's not dark enough to warrant such a precaution. Madison also objects to women who cross the street when approached by suspicious strangers. Excuse me, but regardless of the color of the approaching person I will cross the street if I feel at all threatened. In the past, I have been groped, struck and verbally harassed when I have ignored my instincts in an effort to confront my own, perhaps biased, view of what a criminal looks like. You're right, not all criminals are black males. But I want you to know that all women face fears that most men -- regardless of their race -- think twice about. To be a woman in this scoiety is to be constantly aware of potential danger. So next time you deride women who take measures to protect themselves, think again. HELEN SMOLINSKI College '92
