If white Penn students helping black children is merely an example of the "petting zoo" phenomenon, then what would be Bill Madison's constructive suggestion for a more effective way to help the community? To restrict participation in outreach programs to black students? Well, then, are there enough willing black volunteers from Penn to fill the needs of the entire West Philadelphia community? With the city schools' resources limited as they are, any outside help is welcome from volunteers of any color or background. And besides, isn't finding commonalities such as the joy of learning, regardless of background, what multiculturalism is all about? MANDY BROWN College '94
