As a long-term West Philadelphia resident, I witness daily the abuse many kids suffer at the hands of their parents -- and I use the term charitably. I can tell you this: however brief the time those children spent with their Penn friends, they experienced something positive . . . a ball game, a story, the concious concern of an elder, even a kindly smile. Damn few of them get this in their own homes. Madison's transparently racist, hostile remarks lead unavoidably to the question: has Madison ever managed to get off his own crusty posterior to do anything for these children? Clearly Madison's discomfort with what he saw is rooted in the stark contrast between his own wretched inactivity and the Greeks' altruism. For disciples of Oppression Studies, nothing -- least of all, the truth -- is ever enough. THOMAS FRY Wharton '92
