When The Daily Pennsylvanian went to the Law School Light Opera Company's "Anything Goes" (DP 2/28/92), what exactly did it think it was going to see? I find it disgusting that the DP felt a need to tear the play and performers apart. I'm not taking the DP's review personally; I was not involved in the play except as an audience member. However, unlike the DP, I recognized the play for what it was: graduate students using their scarce spare time to do something productive besides studying law, and, in the process, having some fun and entertaining their fellow students. These were not acting students bound for a life in the theater, and therefore, they should not be subject to the same "standard of review" -- I use that phrase begging the forgiveness of my class -- as acting students. Even if the DP had an overwhelming need to point out that the singing was not Broadway quality, it could have done so without pointing out specific cast members. Even future lawyers can be sensitive.
