This week, for example, Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey told students at the University of New Hampshire that as president he would fight to give everyone a chance to attend college. This indicates that there is a good chance not everyone will get a chance, and does not even begin to address what to do with those who do get a chance. What will we do? Kerrey is not atypical of what Democratic candidates have to offer. Furthermore, the current Republican front-runner shows no sign of reversing the Reagan-Bush tradition of decreasing higher education support. Can we set our sights this low and still hope to compete? Those candidates who do have education platforms concern themselves primarily with the dismal state of basic education, and offer little direction on what to do with students once they are literate. What will we do?
