According to professors, administrators and students alike, the small group discussions of the Euripides play, Bacchae -- which were held as a part of New Student Week -- were a wonderful introduction to college academic life. The fact that nearly all 2200 students, whether they be in the College, Wharton, Engineering or Nursing will have read at least one common book during their four years here, adds weight to the administration's marketing claim that this is "one University." Certainly, the experiment should continue with next year's incoming freshmen. Maybe the administration could also send along a list of suggested works that all incoming students should read. But here we may be treading on dangerous ground. After all, who's to decide what should be in the University's "canon." In any event, kudos to the organizers of the program.
