Want to Pass? Gmail's a No-No for One Prof

(10/01/12 5:23pm)

Guess someone's not a fan of the sappy Google+ hangout commercials. That's right, we've been tipped off to a peculiar new policy being implemented by a majorly anti-Google OPIM professor. The rules detail the sins of submitting assignments from a Gmail address and the resulting punishments. Oh, the HORROR of linking your Penn account to Gmail! Hell hath no fury like an OPIM prof scorned. He's clearly either a) just really proud of you guys for getting into Wharton and wants those "wharton.upenn.edu" addresses utilized to their full potential (sigh), or b) he's got mad stock in Bing!

Don't Forget to Build Your Brand with America's Skinnygirl!

(09/24/12 8:44pm)

Oh my gawd, everyone: Bethenny's Coming to Penn! Just kidding, that's not the name of her latest reality show, but Bethenny Frankel, former Real Housewife of New Yawk and queen of the Skinnygirl cawktail empire, is headed to campus. Wharton Women will be hosting the reality star turned mommy of baby Bryn turned entrepreneur turned talk show host this Friday at the illustrious Benjamin Franklin Ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel!

Penn Alumna Graces the Emmy Stage

(09/24/12 3:10pm)

Last night's 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were filled with drama, upsets and naked Lena Dunham. Luckily, 1990 College graduate Meredith Stiehm was spotted onstage triumphantly. Stiehm is a writer for the Showtime drama Homeland, which cleaned up with statues for stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis, as well as for best drama series. She was among the producer's thank yous and looked ever-so-appreciative in a shimmering black gown.

As Always, Amy is the Toast of Philly

(09/17/12 5:57pm)

Oh, Madame President. We might have thought you couldn't get any more glamorous and universally beloved, but The Philadelphia Inquirer's latest lengthy feature on you has proven us wrong. That's right, a big new article is singing A-Gutt's praises and we couldn't be more thrilled. Detailing the many accomplishments of Amy G's "golden" tenure and looking towards the future (contract extended 'til 2019!), the piece both confirms what we knew and illuminates more of Amy's majestic qualities.

Battle of the High Rises: Rodin vs. Harrison

(09/12/12 1:18pm)

Can't all our College Houses just get along? Apparently, enough is enough for the residents of the 13th (ish) floor of Rodin, who had some choice words for their Harrison counterparts. The sassy memo reads, "Ew, Harrison, we can see you." Whether the animosity is rooted in indecent exposure and lack of blind usage or a brutal breakup with a boy named Harrison, no one likes a bully. Let's just bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and every high rise would be happy.

Ramen Bar at 4040 Locust: Soft Opening Today!

(09/11/12 1:30pm)

Save the Cup Noodles and the rom-com for another night, because West Philly is officially home to Ramen Bar, the swanky new noodle house at 4040 Locust Street. Occupying the space formerly home to Strikes bowling alley and the relocated Locust Moon Comics & Movies, the restaurant has affordable options beyond "Beef Flavor." How thrilling. Ramen Bar has a liquor license, so keep the Franzia for at-home ramen and upgrade to sake bombing!

Amy Brings Holocaust Testimonial Database to Penn

(04/25/12 12:46am)

A-Gutt is helping enrich the Penn community once again. This time, it's in a very unique and powerful way. Over 50,000 video testimonials from Holocaust survivors have been added to Penn's library system and will be available to the public. The testimonials were collected by the Shoah Foundation Institute at University of Southern California, which was founded in 1994 by legendary director Steven Spielberg. The testimonials are in over 30 languages and many interviewees have since passed away.

Lil' Pop Shop Takes a Lil' Gamble at 44th and Spruce

(04/17/12 8:43pm)

And POP! go our hearts for this new eatery attempting to find a home in University City. Looks like the space formerly occupied by Unitea (where'd you go, huh?), is set to house Lil' Pop Shop, a new gourmet popsicle shop. Featuring such exotic flavors as Vietnamese coffee and cucumber lime mint, the store is set to open in May under the ownership of Jeanne Chang, as the DP reports.

Penn Team Competes At USA Memory Championship

(03/25/12 2:47pm)

We totally forgot it was even happening, but the 15th Annual USA Memory Championship was held today in New York! Luckily, Penn had a team that was not as absentminded. Caitlin Applebaum, Jason Mow and Michael Mirski faced off in the tournament, which tests the memorization of everything from an unpublished poem to the order of a deck of cards.

Amy Wines And Dines With Barack, Clooney And Others

(03/15/12 9:42pm)

Oh, Madame President. Your alluring blonde image has just gotten even more elite. The Washington Post confirms A-Gutt is truly a celebrity beyond Penn's campus, as she and Columbia professor/hubby Michael Doyle (listed as "Michael Gutmann" by WaPo...)  made the guest list for last night's British State Dinner at the White House.

(03/01/12 12:06am)

Every year at Convocation, Madame President calls the freshman class the best and brightest in Penn's history. But yesterday seven especially best and bright Penn students received the prestigious Thouron Award. The award has been given annually since its establishment in 1960 and promotes a relationship between Penn and British universities. Recipients get to pursue graduate at the British university of their choice with up to two years of financial support. Congrats to the lucky seven:

Barack's Sticking With Amy

(02/18/12 9:58pm)

Obama has a lot of decisions to make before the big election in November. But rest assured, he has made the right choice in one of the most crucial presidential decisions to date. The Prez has reappointed our Prez, the one and only Amy Gutmann, as chair of the Presidential Commission on Bioethical Issues. What a great prezent! Amy G. has productively served in this role since being appointed by Obama in 2009. While some have questioned whether she's fit for it , it's clear Barack knows best. Mazel tov, A-Gut!

Amy: Proudly Penn At The Palestra

(02/12/12 7:49pm)

Spotted: our girl A-Gut in the stands at the Penn-Harvard basketball game, cheering on the Quakers! That's right, our ever-effervescent Madame President made a public appearance in all her blonde glory Friday night at the Palestra. Seen with her elusively public husband, Columbia professor Michael Gutmann Doyle, Amy G. applauded our players' performance on the court, but, like the rest of us, could not hide her chagrin with our unfortunate loss to the Crimsons. She also posed with student government members, appeared via video for a trivia contest and graciously posed for a photo for UTB. Amy--she's just like us!

Oyster House To Replace La Terrasse

(02/11/12 3:44pm)

Break out the seersucker and lobster pants. Pop those collars. Tie those sweaters around your necks. Sansom's 3400 block is getting an oyster house! Specifically, Doc Magrogan's Oyster House is opening in the former location of La Terrasse, as Philly.com reports. The university-owned property has been dark for almost a year since the beloved LaT closed after 15 years of revolving operators.

Tell Me More, Tell Me More, Was She On NPR?

(02/03/12 12:19am)

Middle-aged liberals and their children, listen up! Professor Lorene Cary of the English department was the latest Penn community member featured as a guest on NPR. She hit up Tell Me More yesterday, discussing her memoir, "Black Ice," and Black History Month. Professors from Yale and Howard University join her for the cheery and topical discussion. Professor Cary name drops everything from Philadelphia's School Reform Commission to Frederick Douglass.

English Professor Goes Gentlemanly

(02/01/12 3:34pm)

Jay Kirk, who currently teaches Creative Non-Fiction Writing in the English Department, has published a long-form article in February's GQ. The piece, entitled "Burning Man," tells the story of a soldier in Afghanistan who is the victim of severe burns and recovers from his trauma with the help of an experimental painkilling video game treatment. Gamers are apparently saving the world in ways Jane McGonigal never could have imagined!

R.I.P. MidAtlantic

(01/21/12 10:03pm)

...and another restaurant bites the dust. In today's devastating local business news, Philly.com has confirmed that MidAtlantic, Daniel Stern's 37th and Market restaurant, will be closing its doors on February 24. Luckily, Stern's other joint, R2L (on 16th), is still open for business. Rumors are swirling amongst the foodie community that an employee of famed chef Steven Starr toured the space, so hopefully we won't be lacking a major Family Weekend eatery for too long.
